Do private deals with Virgin and Serco signal end of NHS?

Days before the Health Bill – now the Health Act – completed its passage through parliament, giant outsourcing firm Serco secured its status as preferred bidder for a £140m deal to run community services in Suffolk.

On 30 March, three days after the Bill gained royal assent, Virgin Care went one better and signed a contract worth £500m to take over the entire provider arm of NHS Surrey.

Serco Group plc (Serco), the international service company, announces today that it has been selected as preferred bidder for a new contract to provide community health services for NHS Suffolk. The contract, which is expected to be signed in the coming months and is due to start in Autumn 2012, has a total estimated value of £140m to Serco over three years.

CCGs warned to expect media scrutiny over personal budgets

GP commissioners will have to justify the more ‘unusual' use of personal budgets when they are rolled out nationwide in 2014 as media interest is likely to intensify in expenditure on the scheme, says a senior official at the Department of Health.

Health secretary Andrew Lansley has announced personal health budgets will be rolled out to everyone receiving NHS continuity of care by April 2014, but experts have warned expenditure on non-NHS treatments would prove controversial.

TPP to pilot new SystmOne Enhanced Sharing Model with Northamptonshire PCT

Even though the new sharing model is only being piloted in one PCT, it is vital for every SystmOne user to know about the potential changes on SystmOne if a patient crosses border and registers at a unit outside of the Northamptonshire area.

Enhanced Sharing will work on a patient-by-patient basis. If a patient moves from an Enhanced Sharing pilot PCT to an Old or New Sharing PCT, the patient will remain an Enhanced Sharing patient. If you are dealing with an enhanced sharing patient you may be asked to seek two consents from the patient:
